At Brooklyn Community Foundation, we transitioned all our strategic grantmaking—over $4 million annually—to the participatory model in 2021. To help others take on this transition, we are sharing a number of lessons learned—both what we did right and what we wish we knew before starting.

Funded by $1.2 million from Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Greenwood Initiative and Donor Advised Funds at Brooklyn Community Foundation, this new Community Scholarship utilizes NYC Kids RISE’s Save for College Program as a community- driven wealth-building platform and is the largest Community Scholarship in the Program's history.

Earlier this year, Brooklyn Community Foundation launched a Listening Tour to visit ten neighborhoods across Brooklyn and meet with residents and leaders to learn about challenges facing the community and foster collaboration. We recently concluded this tour, and are now sharing what we learned from these community conversations.

There are deep-seated reasons why the vaccination numbers are much lower in certain neighborhoods, and those reasons explain why the broader, well-funded effort to increase vaccination rates — including ad blitzes and cash and cash-equivalent giveaways — has failed in pockets across the city.
